Medical
Waste Management Inc. (MWM) is a very unique
company that provides highly specialized and highly
regulated services to a most important market
- Ontario healthcare.
With
a core management team, each having earned more
than 10 years of specialized industry experience,
a comprehensive business plan was developed for
an Ontario based medical waste service company
that would set a new global standard for this
unique service. In mid 1998, with the financial
support of our 65% majority owners (Brampton Brick
Ltd. (Medical Waste Management was launched.
After
developing the required specifications and identifying
the best available medical waste processing technologies
available, an ideal site was selected in Brampton,
Ontario, Canada and the required Ontario Ministry
of Environment (MOE) approval applications were
submitted. The original MWM management team moved
into our new home in November, just in time to
take delivery of our new equipment, for installation
and commissioning.
In February 1999, after more than six weeks of
MOE witnessed commissioning testing, MWM was formally
approved for commercial operations.
Our new operating standards and un-compromised
commitment to customer satisfaction and environmental
compliance made an immediate impact on Ontario
healthcare facilities and new business came on
board at a brisk pace. By the end of 1999, MWM
had had earned the respect of both industry and
regulatory authorities and provided the highest
standard of service to more than 1000 customers,
including over 20 hospitals.
Now that credibility had been established, MWM
commenced high level consultations with the MOE
to specify, install and commission Ontarios
first and only environmentally superior medical
& pharmaceutical waste incinerator and accompanying
pollution control system. This to position MWM
as the Ontario solution to the Ontario medical
waste challenge and to eliminate the need to export
hazardous waste to the US for destruction, in
old incinerators that did not meet Ontarios
higher regulatory standards for emission control.
After more than a year of continuous consultation,
numerous public meetings, zoning variances, open
houses and a rigorous formal public hearing process,
in the spring of 2001 MWM was issued a formal
approval to incinerate medical & pharmaceutical
waste in Brampton.
Equipped
with this exceptional technology, MWM demonstrated
yet another new standard for environmentally sound
emissions for healthcare waste incinerators. Regulatory
authorities were so impressed with our low-level
emissions, that in December of 2001, the Minister
of Environment announced that the remaining 46
hospital incinerators - all of which are operating
without any pollution control systems whatsoever,
would have one year to meet our new emission standards,
or shut down.
Not being a company that rests on its accomplishments,
in late 2001 MWM launched North Americas
first state-of-the-art reusable sharps containment
and management program, through Sharpsmart Canada
Ltd., a 50-50 joint venture between MWM and the
Daniels Corporation of Australia.
This
revolutionary reusable sharps container and associated
robotic container processing technology is the
safest and most environmentally sound system for
disposing of used needles, blades and broken glass,
anywhere in the world and Ontario hospitals were
the first hospitals in North America to gain access
to this program. This new initiative has been
so well received, that our implementation schedule
is completely booked through July and well into
August. In addition to dramatically reducing healthcare
worker needlestick injuries, the Sharpsmart program
reduces plastic waste volumes for sharps disposal
by more than 50%.
Concepts,
high standards, exceptional technologies and uncompromised
commitments to customer satisfaction and environmental
compliance are all key components to success in
our business however, without the best people
in the business, MWM could never have accomplished
what it has in such a short period. Our people
make our company and without a doubt, we have
the best team in the business.
MWM is armed with the most technologically advanced
medical waste processing & transportation
equipment available, operated by the most qualified
and competent staff possible, guided by the most
experienced and creative management team in the
business. As such, MWM has positioned itself as
THE industry leader in healthcare waste management
and is ideally positioned for continued expedient
growth within Canada, as well as for expansion
& acquisition across North America and Internationally.
